Amber Urlacher was born and raised in Mandan, North Dakota. At the age of 15, her attention was drawn to photography. Amber received her Photographic Communications degree from Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. Here Amber combined her passion for photography with the technical aspects of the camera — lighting, darkroom printing, and digital imaging.
After college, Amber moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to begin her career as a freelance assistant photographer, working for such companies as General Mills, Liz Banfield, Kristine Heykants, & Macy’s (formerly Marshall Fields). It was at Macy’s, Amber remained for three years continuing her growth as a photographer. She worked with staff photographers and was taught lighting techniques from experienced photographers such as Steve Ozone, Jeff Ross, Stewart Block and Jeff Barack.
In June 2006, Amber Urlacher relocated with her husband to Hot Springs, Arkansas. It was while in Arkansas that Amber laid the foundation for Amber Urlacher Photography — fine tuning her style, and thus setting herself apart from her competition.
Amber’s photographic style is natural, and less posed. She learned early on that the “sit, tilt head, say cheese” approach to portraits, especially with children’s portraits, was not the direction she wanted to go. Amber lets the children move around, get comfortable and play, knowing that their natural expression is the best. With weddings, she observed many Bride and Groom, and Bride and Mother discussions and realized a need for “photographic compromise”. Her approach is a mixture of classic posing and a photojournalistic style, to fit families needs. Amber’s photographic background allows her to be artistic, yet technical enough to create the appropriate business headshot.
Amber and her husband Joseph are now living in the St. Paul, Minnesota area. Amber is working hard to make Amber Urlacher Photography a Minnesota success.
